Houston homeowners will learn about potential changes to property taxes during the Oct. 9 City Council meeting. Following two disaster declarations in 2024, city officials can raise the property tax rate for FY 2024-25 without voter approval. The city needs to increase the rate by at least 3.2 cents per $100 valuation to cover approximately $53 million in cleanup costs. Mayor Whitmire prefers to maintain the current rate, while some council members advocate for a higher rate to avoid budget cuts. A decision will be made on Oct. 9, with a public hearing scheduled for Oct. 16.
