Houston redevelopment authority spent millions of affordable housing dollars on office space

Houston’s Midtown Development Zone has spent nearly 15 years acquiring land in Third Ward to combat gentrification and promote affordable housing. However, the office tower intended as a hub for affordable housing resources has not met expectations, facing low occupancy and a lack of retail space. Community leaders express disappointment over unfulfilled promises for retail and community gathering areas. The Redevelopment Authority plans to continue building affordable housing, primarily by selling lots to homebuilders for income-restricted homes.
